Remembering the Legend of Bo Diddley

All of us today at WTIT mourn the loss of Bo Diddley. He was a pioneer of rock ‘n roll and has been credited for the transformation of blues to rock. Bo created the skuttle beat and once said he brought a drummer’s mentality to the guitar. Bo came into this world as Otha Elias Bates McDaniel on Dec. 30, 1928. Bo was born in Mississippi, but moved to Chicago, where he grew up, at age 7. It would be in Chicago in 1951 where he would land his regular gig at a club named the 708 Club. It was where he adopted the name Bo Diddley.

While both rock legends and rock historians give him a great deal of credit for the birth of rock Bo Diddley never saw much money from it all. The Rolling Stones toured with him on their way up. The Beatles were enamored of his music. The Animals wrote The Story of Bo Diddley to give him his due. Today on WTIT we are featuring that Animal tune along with the music of Bo Diddley. Bo successfully won a law suit in the mid 1990’s that his manager had cheated him out of nearly a half million dollars. It is not known, but rather unlikely that he ever saw that money.

Bo Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. He was best known for his signature song that was covered by many, Who Do You Love. It is on today's playlist. He died of heart arrest today at the age of 79. May he long be remembered and may he rest in peace.

It's a shame when these originals leave us. There are plenty of rock and blues musicians, but somebody had to get it started.

Oh! And I love the bling blinking peace announcement at the top of your page. It looks like Christmas is here or something! Come to think of it, it feels like Christmas to me.
