Jimmy Invades Connecticut

The WTIT Tape Radio Blog hopes that you enjoyed your Labor Day Weekend. As I told you yesterday, Johnnie Walker invited me to go to the Jimmy Buffett concert at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Johnnie is a HUGE Parrot Head. I’ve always liked Buffett, but I did not get hooked until 1990. I was going through my first divorce and happened to put on a Buffett tape. The album was “Last Mango in Paris” and is exclusively about relationships: Those ending, those that might begin, those that had begun and some that crash and burn. Since I was experiencing all of this, I listened to it. A lot.

But I hadn’t been to see Jimmy for some twenty years when I caught a show at the old Springfield Civic Center, with Johnnie Walker I should add. A weird aspect of this invite was that we do a feature here called Sunday Stealing where I steal a meme and put my twist on it. On Sunday August 12 the meme, in a post I called People Depend On Me, I was asked to respond to the question “072. Next concert you hope to go to?” I responded, “McCartney or Buffett come to mind.” I did not know that in two weeks and a day I would be sitting with Johnnie once again seeing Buffett. While I am still not a Parrot Head I am now a HUGE fan. The concert was awesome.

The tickets include a free VIP tent that was next to the arena and we were able to park right next to it. Johnnie’s sister Fran had gotten the tickets, and I’m not sure if I said “Thank You!!!” to her, but I do here. We were joined by one of her sons. In the tent, it was open bar and all the food you could eat. No Smirnoff, but I was fine with Belvedere (another premium vodka that I sell.) Since I did not drive, I indulged. We met some cool people. A couple of guys and I got into a conversation about the WTIT Blog. I promise a shout out to Ryan & Chad! I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.

It was the third trip to Connecticut's famous casino Mohegan Sun for Jimmy Buffett. He was awarded a star on their “Walk of Fame” that day. Johnnie cannot wait to do a full-blown tailgate large arena event with me, although there was a lot of that here. The Parrot Heads of Connecticut showed up. Here is the play list for that evening:

1 On The Road Again
2 License To Chill

Video: I Will Play For Gumbo
14 Growing Older But Not Up (with the beach band)
15 Carnival World
16 Coconut Telegraph
17 Door Number Three
18 It's Five O'Clock Somewhere
19 It's My Job
20 Volcano
21 A Pirate Looks At Forty (with Redemption Song)
22 One Particular Harbour
23 Margaritaville

First Encore
24 Everybody's on the Phone
25 Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen cover)

Band Intros: Tina Gullickson, Nadirah Shakoor, Ralph MacDonald, Peter Mayer, Mac MacAnally, Roger Guth, Doyle "The Man From Maine" Grisham, Jim Mayer, Robert Greenidge, Johnny Lovell, Michael Utley, Bill Payne

Second Encore
26 In My Room
27 Tonight I Just Need My Guitar

For that moment in time Johnnie and I were the “Gypsies in the Palace”. We drank, ate, partied and we sung along. If you ever have a chance to see Jimmy, you will not be disappointed. The ONLY oddity at the concert was his cover, during an encore of the Boss’ “Glory Days”. It was fine, but with all his music from all these years, he should forget the covers. Let Bruce sing “Glory Days”. It was a great time!

We hope you enjoyed your visit to the WTIT Tape Radio Blog on a Tuesday that feels like a Monday. We forgot to mention that Sunday Stealing will return next Sunday. We hope to give you the WTIT Blog Recap of August 2007 next time. Same time. Same blog.

I probably could have thrown a rock from my front porch and hit you while you were at the concert. Well, if I had a really good throwing arm, that is!

Concerts are the best, aren't they??

It was a great night. Nice to meet you!

Concerts are great. It was my first one in about five years, so well over due. And I am happy you didn't hit me with the rock...
